UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -The Penn State men's tennis team will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this weekend to take on Virginia Tech and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Lions will face Virginia Tech Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. and Alabama Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. ET.
The Nittany Lions (1-0) are coming off a dominating 7-0 win against Colgate. Alabama (6-0) rolled by Chattanooga this past weekend while the Huskies (2-0) dominated North Carolina A&T.
"There really is no letting up this year in our quality of competition that we play," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "I think it will be our most grueling schedule since I've been here. I believe in our team and the talent that we have and there is no better feeling for a competitor than going against good competition every week. This weekend is no exception with us going down to Tuscaloosa and playing Virginia Tech and Alabama. I know we are up for the task and will give the competition our best shot."
"I would have liked more playing time before we hit Virginia Tech and Alabama," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "Some of our guys will be playing their first matches while Alabama has already played five. It's going to be a long season so we know there is plenty of time to peak. Keeping the guys healthy and injury free is key to the season's success."
Last weekend, Penn State took on Colgate where the Lions dominated the Raiders in a 7-0 sweep. Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil), Alp Sentay (Izmar, Turkey), Zach Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.), Matt Galush (Cary, NC), and Chris Kuhnle (Shoreham, NY) all defeated their opponents in two sets. Noah Sutter (New York, NY) had a comeback win and outmatched his opponent in the third set.
In doubles, Nemeth and Zach Lieb knocked off Colgate in a quick 6-1 match. Kuhnle and Sutter followed them only allowing the Raiders three games. Sentay and Galush's match went into a tiebreak but the Nittany Lions came out victorious.
