BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 12th-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team closes out its two-game road swing to open the 2018 season as they battle Lehigh University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP

  • Penn State and Lehigh will meet for the 26th time on Saturday and the fourth straight year with the Nittany Lions holding the 25-0 all-time record including 11-0 on the road.
  • The Nittany Lions are outscoring the Mountain Hawks 77-28 over the last five meetings including an 18-9 victory last season in Happy Valley.
  • Senior Katie O'Donnell and junior Madison Carter combined for nine goals in last season's victory at the Penn State Lacrosse Field.

SCOUTING LEHIGH

  • The Mountain Hawks enter the weekend 1-0 after securing an 18-5 victory over St. Bonaventure last Saturday. In 2017 Lehigh finished the year at 12-6 and a 6-3 mark in conference play falling to Navy in the Patriot League semifinals.
  • Six players scored multiple goals against the Bonnies led by Mary Ellen Carron with four while Sondra Dickey, Haley Wentzel and Julianne D'Orazio each added three. Dickey collected a pair of assists and currently leads the team with five points.
  • D'Orazio and Wentzel finished second and third on the team in goal scoring last season and will look to lead the team again in 2018 after the graduation of leading goal scorer Allison LaBeau.
  • Freshman Samanthga Sagi got the start in net allowing just five goals while making seven saves to pick up the victory.
  • The Hawks graduated starting goaltender Taylor Tvedt and are without any goalies with NCAA experience prior to this season on their roster. Tvedt started all 18 games last season going 12-6 with a .490 save percentage and a 9.63 goals against average.
  • Lehigh is 4-for-5 in free-position shots this season while also causing 18 turnovers and collecting 34 groundballs in just a single game.

K.O. PUNCH

  • Senior Katie O'Donnell was searching for the knockout blow last weekend at Towson bringing her team back from a six-goal deficit at the half to a single-goal margin in the second half.
  • O'Donnell scored twice in the final minute of play just ten seconds apart to bring Penn State within a single goal at 14-13, but that is how the game ended.
  • O'Donnell scored an earlier goal for a hat-trick in the setback. She has now scored at least one goal in 23 straight contests and has only been held without a goal five times in her 64 career games played.

THA CARTER III

  • Junior Madison Carter began her third season in Happy Valley much like the previous year by tying her career-high with six goals on the afternoon.
  • This marked the fifth time in her career she has found the back of the net six times in a single-game after accomplishing that feat four times in 2017.
  • Carter's 6.00 goals per game average is currently tied for the national lead entering the weekend.

FIRST GAME JITTERS

  • With a young team comprised of 19 underclassmen, the Nittany Lions got off to a slow start last weekend against Towson and were trailing 11-5 entering halftime.
  • Penn State had only faced a six-goal halftime deficit once in 2017 during its NCAA National Semifinal game against Maryland.
  • PSU refocused and played a much stronger second half outscoring the Tigers 8-3 last Saturday.

FRESHMEN FIRSTS

  • Freshman classmates Quinn Nicolai and Sophia Triandafils each recorded the first goals of their Penn State careers last weekend while Triandafils added an assist for a two-point outing.

WINNER, WINNER

  • Sophomore goaltender Madison Cunningham earned her lone collegiate victory last season against the Mountain Hawks after collecting a pair of saves in 44:16 of game action.
  • Last week against Towson, Cunningham made five saves over the final 40:07 of the game. Her 7.48 goals against average is currently second in the Big Ten and 12th in the nation while her .500 save percentage is good for third in the conference and tied for 22nd nationally.
