PITTSBURGH, PA.- The Penn State women's tennis team lost 5-2, in a hard fought battle against Pitt. This loss snaps a two game winning streak for the Lions.
The team lost the doubles point, going 0-2 in doubles matches. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) had their match go unfinished against Luisa Varon and Claudia Bartolome, 5-3. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) fell to Callie Frey and Camilia Moreno, 6-1. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) came up short against Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende, 6-4.
Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) continued to shine in No. 1 singles, defeating Rezende in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Svarre fell to Varon, 6-3, 6-2. Hanley, battled with Moreno for three sets ultimately coming out on top, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Smith was in a tightly contested match with Bartolome, but lost, 7-6, 6-4. Rohrbacher was defeated by Frey, 6-1, 6-4. Dunn fell to Okamoto, 6-0, 6-1.
The Nittany Lions are now 4-3 on the season. Looking ahead, the team will open Big Ten match play against No. 19 Ohio State, at home on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 5:00 p.m.
