UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 7 Penn State dropped its first conference match of the season 3-0 (22-25, 19-25, 22-25) Friday night in Rec Hall falling to 3-1 in EIVA play on the season.
The Patriots brought a stiff defense to Rec Hall finishing the night with 10.0 team blocks as well as five athletes posting at least three blocks including a match-high five by Bryce Gatling.
Penn State led for the majority of the opening set before finding themselves in a tie with the Patriots 19-19. Back-to-back points for George Mason cued a Penn State timeout for the Nittany Lions. a 2-1 run out of the break for George Mason forced a second timeout by Penn State with the Patriots leading 23-20. The second run of 2-1 off the timeout closed out the opening set 25-22 in favor of Mason.
A slow start to the second set saw Penn State down by as much as 12-5 before the Nittany Lions rallied late to cut the lead before falling 25-19 in set two.
Set three saw Penn State play Mason point for point through the first 40 points where the teams found themselves tied 20-20. George Mason capped the set and the match with a 5-2 run that gave the Patriots a 3-0 win over Penn State to move to 3-0 in EIVA play while Penn State fell to 3-1 in conference play on the season and 8-3 overall.
Penn State continues EIVA conference play tomorrow Feb. 24 in the South Gym of Rec Hall as the Nittany Lions take on Charleston (WV) at 7 p.m. ET.
