UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) scored a career-high six goals to help lead No. 12 Penn State past No. 17 Cornell, 16-11, this afternoon in nonconference action from Panzer Stadium.
O'Donnell also added an assist for a career-high seven points and is now tied with Madison Cyr `16 for fourth on the Penn State all-time goals list with 156 as she has recorded multiple goals in all four games so far this season and now leads the team with 14. The senior also extends her goal streak to 26 games.
Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) and sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) each collected hat-tricks for the Nittany Lions while Carter and junior Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) paced the team with nine and four draw controls, respectively.
With her three goals Carter moves past Tatum Coffey '15 for 15th on the Penn State all-time goals list with 131.
Junior Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) was excellent all game on defense causing a game and career-high four turnovers.
The Big Red (1-1) jumped out to a quick start as Tomasina Leska collected a natural hat-trick over the opening 5:31 to give Cornell the 3-0 advantage.
Caroline Allen added to the lead before O'Donnell ripped home the first goal for the Nittany Lions (3-1) to spark a 4-0 run and tie the contest at 4-4 midway through the opening half on goals Carter, freshman Quinn Nicolai (Moorestown, N.J.) and Auth.
Cornell ended its scoreless drought of 22 minutes as Ida Farinholt found the back of the net at 1:49 for the one-goal lead, but on the ensuing draw Carter skied to control it and raced down the middle of the field ripping home her second of the game for the 5-5 score just nine ticks later.
O'Donnell then gave the Nittany Lions the lead heading into the break as she potted back-to-back free-position tallies with just 24 and eight seconds remaining in the half for the 7-5 advantage.
Auth fired in her second of the game to open the second half scoring at 28:32 for the 8-5 lead, but Cornell used a mini 3-1 run to cut the deficit to a single goal after back-to-back scores from Caroline Allen at 24:35 and 22:39.
Auth and O'Donnell then scored just 1:43 apart to extend the lead back to 10-8 at the 19:03 mark, but again the Big Red wouldn't go away as another 3-1 spurt cut the lead to 12-11 after a Sarah Phillips score at the 10:48 mark.
Penn State then used a 4-0 run to close the game after a pair of goals from O'Donnell and one each from Carter and senior Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) for the 16-11 final.
Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) earned her first collegiate victory after collecting eight saves and allowing just seven goals over the final 53:19 of game action. Sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) was unable to make a save on four shots after playing the opening 6:41.
Penn State held the 33-25 edge in shots including the 27-19 lead in shots on target. The Nittany Lions were also 17-for-19 on the clear and 10-for-14 on free-position shots
Penn State remains home next weekend as they close out this current three-game homestand when they host Loyola-Maryland next Saturday at 1 p.m.
