MTN: Lions Open B1G Play This Week

Feb. 26, 2018

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State men's tennis team will travel to Columbus, Ohio for their fifth away match in a row this weekend. The Lions will face No. 3 Ohio State Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m.

The Nittany Lions (5-4) are coming off two dominating wins this past weekend. No. 3 Ohio State is 10-1 on the season with their only loss coming from No. 4 UCLA. This is Ohio State's first conference match of the season as well.

Last season in the Big Ten, Penn State defeated two ranked opponents, No. 31 Minnesota and No. 45 Indiana.

"Taking on a top ranked Ohio State at their place is always exciting and a challenge," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "Ty Tucker is one of the best coaches in college tennis and his team knows how to win matches. We are playing very well in doubles and anything can happen if we can get that point. Win or lose, I'm hoping we have that battle. We had two good away wins and the guys are feeling good. These Big Ten matches are what we work hard to win."

On Sunday, Feb. 25, Penn State traveled to Virginia where they faced VCU and James Madison in a double header. The Lions knocked off VCU 5-0 and James Madison 6-1.

Against VCU, No. 99 Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France) and Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) each defeated their opponents in two sets. Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario) and Gabriel Nemeth's (Brasilia, Brazil) matches went to three sets with the Nittany Lions coming out victorious.

In doubles, Lakoseljac and De La Bassetiere outmatched their opponent in a tiebreak. Alp Sentay (Izmar, Turkey) and Antonopoulos defeated VCU 6-4.

Against James Madison, the Nittany Lions went 5-1 in singles. De La Bassetiere, Lakoseljac, Antonopoulos and Sentay all outplayed their opponents in two sets. Nemeth had a huge win in tiebreak. In doubles, the Lions had little difficulty sweeping James Madison 3-0.
