UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 9 Penn State fought past No. 15 Fort Wayne 3-1 Saturday night in Rec Hall (South Gym).
Penn State (5-2) opened the match with a 30-28 first set win to take a 1-0 lead that lasted for one set as Fort Wayne (8-1) clinched the second set 25-19 to knot the match at 1-1 at the break.
Set three proved to be pivotal as the momentum swung to the Nittany Lions who fought from an early 0-2 deficit to match the Mastodons point for point through the majority of the set. Trailing by one, a Fort Wayne ball handling error forced a Mastodon timeout with the score tied.
Out of the timeout, the Lions went up by one on a Mastodon attack error before surrendering a point off a service error.
A Penn State attack error followed by a Levin Gear kill saw the set tied once again, this time at 26-all.
a few points later the Nittany Lions were able to post back-to-back scores to take set three 29-27 taking a 2-1 match lead.
Set four was all Penn State as they held Fort Wayne to .077 hitting during the set while hitting .393 as a team.
Penn State took set four 25-15 taking a 3-1 win and handing Fort Wayne their first loss of the season as the Mastodons drop to 8-1 overall.
Jalen Penrose led the Lions in kills on the night registering 15 to go along with eight digs and five blocks.
Luke Braswell dished out 54 assists while Jason Donorovich recorded a match-high seven blocks.
Penn State opens EIVA conference play Saturday Feb. 10 in Loretto, Pa. as the Nittany Lions take on Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m. ET in DeGol Arena.
