UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State men's tennis team fell to Penn, 4-2, at the Hecht Tennis Center in Philadelphia today. This loss snaps a three game winning streak for the Lions.
In doubles, the point came down to court two. Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) and Matt Galush (Cary, N.C.) got the lone win in doubles against Max Cancilla and Alexs Huryn, 6-4. Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France) and Christian Lakoseljac (King City, Ontario) battled with Kyle Mautner and Dmitry Shatalin but ultimately lost, 6-3. Christos Antonopoulos (Athens, Greece) and Alp Sentay (Izmar, Turkey) fell in a tightly contested match against Josh Pompan and Nicholai Westergaard, 7-5.
The team battled in singles going 2-3 with one unfinished match. The Lions fought tough pushing four matches to the third set. Galush knocked off Noah Makarome 6-3, 6-0 extending his win streak to four and remaining undefeated at 5-0 for the spring season. Lakoseljac had a comeback in the second set to knock of Pompan 4-6, 7-6, 6-0. Antonopoulos' match against Cancilla went unfinished, 4-6, 7-6, 5-5.
No. 94 De La Bassetiere fell to Mautner 6-1, 6-1. Nemeth extended his match to three sets but was defeated by Shatalin 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Zach Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) also took his match to three and served twice for match point, but Huryn came out with the win 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (5).
"I'm not sure what happened here," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "We were on top in doubles and let two match points slip away giving Penn the point. The guys pulled it together in singles and we knew it was going to be a battle. Going inside on faster courts may have contributed to some guys not finding their groove. Penn did a great job grinding this one out."
The Lions are now 8-6 on the season. The team is back in action Saturday, March 17 when they face Princeton at home.
