Biddle Grabs Javelin Title on Day One of Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge

TEMPE, Ariz
. - Penn State opened the 2018 outdoor season Friday night with multiple PRs and an event title in the men's javelin throw on the opening day of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.

In the men's hammer throw Luke Grodeska grabbed the top finish for the Nittany Lions with his personal best mark of 54.48m (178'-9") that was good for eighth-place. Ben Peterson followed up with a personal best of his own at 45.56m (149'-5") finishing 13th-overall.

Moving to the javelin throw, Penn State's Michael Biddle captured the event title in convincing fashion winning by over 13-feet with his best of 71.20m (233'-7"). Teammates Mark Porter (64.40m/211'-3") and Matt Nawrocki (58.02m/190'-4") finished third and sixth, respectively.

In the women's javelin throw, Madison Smith set a personal best finishing with a best throw of 45.72m (150'-0") for fifth-place while Stephanie Sievers (42.52m/139'-6"), Rosemary Campbell (41.82m/137'-2"), and Madeline Holmberg (36.40m/119'-5") finished eighth, 10th and 15th, respectively.

In the team race, the Penn State men are currently in second-place with 20 points through three events, while the women's team is currently in fifth-place with five points through two events.

Penn State returns for a full day of action on the final day of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge hosted by Arizona State. Day two action is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. ET.
