UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) scored a game-high five goals, but it wasn't enough as No. 13 Penn State dropped a 16-15 decision in overtime to No. 23 Loyola-Maryland in nonconference action this afternoon from Panzer Stadium.

Sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) added four goals of her own while freshman Sophia Triandafils (Wading River, N.Y.) and senior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) each added a pair. For O'Donnell this marks the 27th straight game she's scored a goal and the 13th consecutive with at least two goals.

The Nittany Lions benefitted from a strong showing at the 8-meter as they went 7-for-11 on free-position shots.

Loyola (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage at the 28:37 mark of the first half after a pair of goals by Frankie Kamely before Penn State (3-2) used a 9-1 advantage over the next 23 minutes of game action to grab the 9-3 lead.

Carter registered a hat-trick during the streak while Auth had a pair of goals herself. Senior Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) added one goal and a pair of assists during the spurt.

However, the Greyhounds scored three times over the final 3:08 to cut the deficit to 9-6 heading into the intermission.

The Nittany Lions came out of the break firing on all cylinders using a 4-0 run to jump out to the 13-6 advantage at the 24:12 mark after Carter's fifth goal of the game. Auth also added her third goal of the contest to open the second half scoring.

Loyola answered with a 6-0 run of its own over the next nine minutes of action to get within a goal, 13-12, after a Taylor VanThof score with 15:36 remaining in the second half.

Auth ended the run giving the hosts a two-goal edge with her fourth goal of the game at 11:03 for the 14-12 advantage, but the Greyhounds responded with back-to-back tallies from Sam Fiedler and Hannah Powers to tie the contest at 14-14 at the 9:17 mark.

O'Donnell ripped home a free-position score to give the Nittany Lions the 15-14 edge at 7:12, but with under 30 seconds to play Kamely fired home the equalizer yet again off a feed from Livy Rosenzweig for the 15-15 score with just 28 ticks remaining in regulation.

Carter had a point blank offering stuffed by Loyola net-minder Kady Glynn with just four seconds remaining and the game trickled into extra time.

The Greyhounds won the draw and after a pair of cards expired and the visitors returned to even strength it was Hannah Powers who raced through the 8-meter and firing a shot past freshman goalkeeper Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) for the golden goal and 16-15 victory with just 50 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Lowe was dealt the tough luck loss to fall to 1-1 on the year after allowing a pair of goals with a pair of saves over the final 11:27 of game action after relieving sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) who stopped 10 shots over the first 50:43.

Glynn earned the victory for Loyola-Maryland as she improves to 1-2 on the year after stopping 11 shots.

Penn State outshot Loyola 35-29 including, but the Greyhounds held the slim 28-27 edge in shots on target. Loyola also controlled the draw (18-15) while securing more groundballs (15-14). The Nittany Lions were a perfect 17-for-17 on the clear and only had nine turnovers all game and just three in the second half.

Penn State hits the road next week for a pair of away contests during Spring Break starting with a 2 p.m. affair at James Madison on Wednesday.
