PRINCETON, N.J. - Penn State suffered its first conference road loss Saturday night at Dillon Gym as the Tigers downed the Nittany Lions 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 29-31, 13-15).
Tied at two sets apiece after four, Penn State opened the fifth set with a Calvin Mende kill to jump out to an early lead that would hold for much of the set with the Lions extending the lead to as much as five prior to a timeout by the Tigers.
The timeout by Princeton proved to be pivotal as Princeton knotted the match at 25-25 following two timeouts by the Nittany Lions. Back-to-back kills from Princeton by George Humann and Greg Luck gave the Tigers a 31-29 set win and 3-2 match win over Penn State.
Penn State finished with three players posting double-digit kills including Matthew McLaren (22), Aidan Albrecht (18) and Calvin Mende (13). Luke Braswell led the match with 56 assists while Penn State as a team recorded seven service aces.
As a team, Penn State finished the night with 13.0 team blocks led by Kevin Gear who had seven of his own.
The Nittany Lions drop to 5-2 in EIVA play and currently hold an overall record of 11-3 on the season.
Penn State takes a break from EIVA action to take part in the Outrigger Invitational where the Nittany Lions will take on BYU, Lewis and host school Hawai'i. Penn State takes the court against BYU Mar. 8 at 9 p.m. ET in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
