HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) registered five goals including four in the second half, but it wasn't enough as No. 17 Penn State dropped a 14-12 decision to No. 7 James Madison in nonconference action this afternoon from Sentara Park.
Penn State (3-3) opened the scoring as Carter ripped home a feed from sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) on the opening possession just 68 seconds into the contest for the 1-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions extended that lead after freshman Sophia Triandafils (Wading River, N.Y.) connected on the free-position at the 25:43 mark for the 2-0 advantage.
JMU (6-0) responded using a 6-1 run aided by a pair of goals from Haley Warden over the next 15 minutes to grab the 6-3 lead at the 9:42 mark of the opening half.
Senior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) added the lone goal for Penn State during that spurt at 17:20 and the senior then ended a string of three consecutive goals by the Dukes as she cut the deficit to a pair of goals with her second of the game at 7:42 for the 6-4 score.
Warden would then rip the hat-trick giving the hosts the 7-4 lead at the break after scoring with just six seconds remaining in the first half. Warden used that momentum to open the scoring in the second half at the 25:23 mark sparking a 6-1 scoring run over the opening 17 minutes to give JMU the 13-5 lead.
Gallagher scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions as she registered her hat-trick at the 18:42 mark while Elena Romesburg scored a pair of goals for the Dukes to secure her hat-trick.
Senior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) then sparked a comeback with her first tally of the game at the 11:01 mark of the second half as Penn State went on a 7-1 scoring run during 6:23 span to cut the deficit to a pair of goals, 14-12, with 3:38 remaining.
Carter added four goals during the run while Auth potted a single goal and O'Donnell added an additional score. However, the Dukes made a couple late saves to preserve the victory.
Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) was dealt the loss after stopping a career-high 11 shots over the first 48:59 of the game as she falls to 1-3 on the year. Ellie Harmeyer improves to 5-0 on the year after collecting six saves in the victory.
Penn State remains on the road as they travel to Albany on Sunday to battle the Great Danes in a 12 p.m. affair.

- Penn State was held to a season-low nine shots in the first half while JMU finished the game with the 33-24 edge in shots including the 25-18 mark in shots on target.
- Each team secured 14 draw controls while the Dukes held the 23-13 advantage in groundballs.
- O'Donnell has now gone 28 straight games with a goal and 14 consecutive with multiple goals while Carter runs her goal streak to nine straight games and has scored five goals in back-to-back games.
- With her five goals, Carter moves past Mary Ann Foley '90 and into 11th on the Penn State all-time goals list with 141 goals just one back of Michele DeJuliis '97 for tenth.
- Auth sees her streak of eight straight games with multiple goals snapped, but she extends her goal streak to nine games.
