BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ââ'¬" The Penn State softball team was outlasted by Indiana in a 4-1 contest Saturday, April 21 at Andy Mohr Field in game two of the Big Ten Conference series.
Sophomore Kennedy Legg (Keller, Texas) led the Nittany Lions at the plate with her third home run of the season and sophomore Christa Wagner (Plainfield, Mass.) went 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of singles for the Blue and White. Junior Tori Dubois (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) extended her reached base streak to 12 games with a walk to leadoff the game.
Senior Jessica Cummings (Owings, Md.) had the start in the circle, throwing 4.0 complete innings and junior Madison Shaffer (New Castle, Pa.) hurled the final two innings for Penn State.
For the Hoosiers, Sarah Galovich was 2-for-2 with a single, a double, a walk, and an RBI and Tara Trainer earned her second win of the series in the circle, tossing the final four innings in relief of Emily Goodin.
With runners on first and second, the Nittany Lions caught both runners stealing to close out the first inning of the game with both teams scoreless. The Hoosiers were the first to light up the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning as Katie Lacefield led off the inning with a single and scored on a Galovich double into right center.
Legg tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when she roped a solo home run off the right field foul pole for Penn State.
Indiana answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the third on a Lacefield single up the middle with a runner on second.
The Hoosiers tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Rachel O'Malley singled through the right side to take the 4-1 advantage. Senior Gianna Arrizurieta (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) drew a walk in the top of the seventh with one out, but Indiana secured the final outs of the inning as Penn State fell 4-1 in game two of the series.
