STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) registered a career-high three goals, but it wasn't enough as No. 17 Penn State dropped a tough non-conference decision to No. 1 Stony Brook, 21-13, this afternoon from LaValle Stadium.

Senior classmate Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) added three goals of her own to tie her career-high while sophomore Kristin Roberto (Miller Place, N.Y.) tallied two goals and one assist for a career-best three points. Sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) and junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) each added a pair of goals in the setback.

Stony Brook (16-0) jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead over the opening 15 minutes of the first half before Penn State (9-7) was even able to register a shot on goal. Courtney Murphy and Samantha DiSalvo each registered a pair of goals during that opening stretch.

The Nittany Lions nearly got on the board to end the run as Gallagher came around the cage from the left side, but her low shot was denied by Seawolf goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero at the 12:38 mark of the first half.

The Seawolves came right down the field on the ensuing possession and it was Kylie Ohlmiller tilting the score to 8-0 at the 13:00 mark. Gallagher came right back to finish low on the left side of the cage after receiving a feed from Roberto at the 12:05 mark and just 53 seconds later Wells scored on the free-position for the 8-2 deficit.

Junior Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) made it three goals in-a-row for the Nittany Lions as she ripped a bounce shot past Tesoriero at the 9:42 mark, but Murphy ended the mini spurt with her third of the game at the 8:01 mark for the 9-3 advantage.

The teams then traded goals heading into the intermission as Wells and Roberto added scores for Penn State and Stony Brook held the 13-5 advantage at the break.

Penn State came out in the second half clicking on all cylinders scoring the first three goals of the period as Auth ripped in a pair of free-position scores with a goal from Carter stuck in between for the 13-8 deficit at the 25:08 mark.

The Seawolves came right back, however, using a 5-0 spurt to hit running time at the 19:05 mark after three goals from DiSalvo and a pair from Murphy gave the hosts the 18-8 lead. Stony Brook added two more extending the run to 7-0 before Wells answered to tip the hat-trick at the 12:47 mark for the 20-9 score.

Roberto then fired in a free-position goal with 8:14 on the clock before Gallagher registered back-to-back goals in just 16 seconds and Carter made it a 5-0 run for the visitors with her second of the game at the 1:46 mark for the 20-13 deficit. However, Ally Kennedy ripped one in at the 1:23 mark for the 21-13 final.

Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) absorbed the loss to fall to 7-7 on the year after making a pair of saves during 35:46 of game action while sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) stopped three shots in 24:14 of time.

Penn State concludes the regular season at home as part of Senior Day with a 2 p.m. affair against Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
