UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 17 Penn State dropped a heart-breaker as time expired, 12-11, to Michigan in Big Ten action this evening from Panzer Stadium.
Penn State falls to 9-8 on the year while concluding the regular season with a 3-3 mark in conference action. Michigan finishes its season 7-10 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play.
The Nittany Lions opened up a 6-0 lead midway through the first half using six different goal scorers in the process with junior Kayla Brisolari (Crofton, Md.) starting the scoring just 25 seconds in and sophomore Kristin Roberto (Miller Place, N.Y.) capping the run at the 16:10 mark. Senior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.), sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.), senior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and freshman Quinn Nicolai (Moorestown, N.J.) registered the other scores during that opening stretch.
Michigan finally got on the board as Molly Garrett fired one home at the 13:12 mark before Bianca Brueckner scored on the free-position to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 6-2 at the break.
Cailtin Muir and Maggie Kane opened the second-half scoring for the Wolverines as the visitors cut the deficit to 6-4 just 3:36 into the half, however, Roberto made the score 7-4 Penn State with a free-position goal to end a 23:25 scoring drought by the Nittany Lions.
Michigan then scored two of the next three goals to cut the margin back to two goals, 8-6. Brisolari sprinted right down the field firing a bounce shot past Wolverine net-minder Alli Kothari for the lone Nittany Lion goal during that stretch at the 18:40 mark.
After a free-position goal from Nicolai made the score 9-6 in favor of Penn State at the 11:12 mark, Michigan went on a 3-0 run to tie the contest after back-to-back goals over a ten-second span from Molly Garrett at the 5:29 mark.
The teams then traded goals as Auth and Carter scored at 3:10 and 0:28, respectively, with a goal from Lilly Grass mixed in for the 11-10 advantage. However, Michigan used a turnover to register the equalizer with just six seconds remaining before Maggie Kane grabbed the ensuing draw and fired one just before time expired that trickled past Nittany Lion freshman goalkeeper Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) for the 12-11 victory.
Lowe tied her career-high with 13 saves, but falls to 7-8 on the season while her counterpart, Kothari, improves to 7-10 after stopping 11 shots in the victory.
Penn State will head to Ann Arbor, Mich. next weekend for the 2018 Big Ten Tournament and the third-seed where they will battle No. 2 seed Northwestern on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the second semifinal.
