FINAL STATISTICS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Minnesota RHP Patrick Frederickson (4-0) carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 17-2 win over Penn State Saturday afternoon in Purdue's Alexander Field.

Frederickson worked 7 1/3 innings for Minnesota (20-10, 4-1 Big Ten), allowing just a double to Penn State (7-17, 1-7 Big Ten) right fielder Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa.) and an unearned run in the eighth, while striking out seven for the game. Prior to the eighth, Penn State's lone base runners reached on errors in the third and fifth innings. First baseman Shea Sbranti (Oakley, Calif.) appeared to have a base hit or perhaps more in the fifth, but right fielder Ben Mezzenga made a diving catch to prolong the no-hit bid.

Robison reached third on his double after it was mishandled in the right field corner for an error, and he then scored on an RBI-groundout by catcher Logan Goodnight (Wheeling, W.Va.). RHP Jake Stevenson relieved Frederickson after the out and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. The Nittany Lions added another run in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by center fielder Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.) for the final margin.

Minnesota scored in all but the sixth inning. Catcher Eli Wilson and third baseman Micah Coffey hit RBI-singles in the first, second baseman Luke Pettersen hit an RBI-single in the second, Coffey hit a solo home run in the third, center fielder Alex Boxwell hit a three-run home run in the fourth as part of a six-run inning, first baseman Cole McDevitt hit an RBI-double in the fifth, shortstop Terrin Vavra hit a solo home run in the seventh and then Minnesota tacked on five runs in the eighth.

Vavra went 4-for-4 while Wilson tallied a game-high four RBIs. Pettersen and Coffey both had three-hit games with Pettersen adding three RBIs and Coffey two.

The two teams will conclude the series Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

The three-game series, originally scheduled to be played at Minnesota, is being played at Purdue due to winter weather in Minneapolis.
