ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) registered four goals, but it wasn't enough as the third-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions fell to the top-seed Maryland Terrapins, 21-12, in the Big Ten Championship this afternoon from the U-M Lacrosse Stadium.

Penn State falls to 10-9 on the year and will await an at-large bid into the 2018 NCAA Tournament when the bracket is released later this evening. Maryland improves to 18-1 on the year and earns the Big Ten automatic bid with its third-straight Big Ten Championship.

Senior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) added three goals of her own while sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) scored twice.

Penn State opened the scoring just 55 seconds in as sophomore Maria Auth (Street, Md.) fired home the opening goal, but Maryland responded with a 3-0 spurt to grab the 3-1 lead after a Taylor Hensh goal at the 21:47 mark.

However, the Nittany Lions responded scoring twice in just 27 seconds as Carter ripped home a free-position attempt before senior Shelby Wells (Timonium, Md.) used some slick moves around the crease for the 3-3 score at the 20:17 mark.

Megan Whittle and Caroline Steele then sparked the Terrapins as they each scored twice during a 5-0 run to make the score 8-3 at the 10:31 mark, before Carter ended the spurt with her second of the game off a feed from freshman Rachel Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) at the 7:37 mark of the opening half.

The Terrapins then used three different goal scorers and a 3-0 spurt to go into the locker room with the 11-4 advantage.

The Nittany Lions opened the second half strong as it was Gallagher scoring three of the first four goals to pull Penn State to within five goals at 12-7 at the 25:24 mark, however three straight tallies by Whittle gave the Terrapins the 15-7 advantage at the 17:21 mark.

The teams then traded goals before Maryland scored back-to-back followed by back-to-back tallies for Penn State from Carter and junior Kelly Daggett (Bainbridge, Pa.) at the 10:06 and 9:39 marks, respectively for the 18-11 deficit.

The Terps then finished the game on a mini 3-1 spurt to account for the final score.

Freshman Lucy Lowe (Cockeysville, Md.) drops to 8-9 with the setback after stopping five shots over 27:23 of game action while sophomore Madison Cunningham (Davie, Fla.) registered seven saves in 32:37 of game time.
