WTEN Opens Fall Slate at Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team will travel to Midland, Texas to compete in the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. The tournament, hosted from Friday through Sunday Sept. 14-16, kicks off the six tournament fall schedule for the team.

Four Nittany Lions will be making the trip to Texas, three returning players and one newcomer. Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.), Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) return to the team and Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) will be making her Penn State debut.

All four will compete in both singles and doubles. The pairings of Smith/Svarre and O'Gorman/Sawyer are a new look in doubles for the Nittany Lions.

"Our entire team is excited for the fall season to kick off in Midland this weekend," said head coach Chris Cagle. " We are sending four student athletes to Midland and look forward to testing ourselves against what is annually strong competition. The conditions in Midland are always hot, so it will be a good test for our ball tolerance, conditioning and style of play we have been working on in practice. We also will have a few new doubles teams so it will be good to see them in a tournament setting. I look forward to weekend and seeing how our work over the summer and fall has positioned us as we kick off the fall!"

Up next, the team will travel in-state to the Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21-23.
