PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the three-day Cissie Leary Invitational. Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) was a finalist, coming in second in flight B singles.
Weinberg advanced to the semifinals against Yekaterina Alferova of Columbia, gritting out a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win. In the finals, Weinberg faced off against Mimi Levine of the University of Pennsylvania, falling 6-1, 6-2.
In Weinberg's first tournament as a Nittany Lion, she notched four straight singles wins to make it to the finals in flight B singles.
Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) competed in a pick-up match against Maria Adiacontei of Cornell, falling in a tough three-set match, 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. Gracy Hirsch took on Sarah Campbell in a pick-up match, falling 6-1, 6-0.
"Overall, it was successful weekend for our team," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We played hard, saw good things, saw things to work on and got great match experience. Credit to Sydney for making the finals of her first college tournament. I look forward to competing next weekend at Virginia Tech!"
Up next, the Nittany Lions will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to the Hokie Fall Invite hosted by Virginia Tech from Sept. 28-30.
