ROSEMONT, Ill. – Freshman Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon following her performance at the Nittany Lion Invitational this past weekend.
In just her second collegiate tournament, Willis set a new tournament record as well as a Penn State 54-hole school record carding an 11-under, 205, to capture individual medalist honors. The rookie led from wire-to-wire firing rounds of 68 (4-under), 70 (2-under) and 67 (5-under). Her final round score also matched a Penn State 18-hole and single-round tournament record.
Willis finished the week with 16 birdies to lead all golfers and also turned in an eagle during her final round. The freshman collected seven birdies in the opening round and began her final round with five-straight red numbers.
Through the first five rounds of her collegiate career, Willis has a stroke average of 70.60 to lead the team.
This marks the first time Penn State has earned a Big Ten Golfer of the week honor since senior Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) earned that honor on October 25, 2017.
The Nittany Lions return to action this weekend as they travel to the Princeton Invitational to compete on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30.
