Sawyer Shines In Day Two Of Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Penn State women's tennis team picked up two doubles wins and six singles victories in a strong second day of Virginia Tech's Hokie Invite Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Chelsea Sawyer led the way for the Nittany Lions, grabbing two singles wins to advance to Sunday's main draw final.
 
"Our team has played a lot of tennis this weekend, which has been great and is why we are here," said head coach Chris Cagle. "Collectively, we competed hard today and picked up a number of wins in both singles and doubles.  Right now we are building for the remainder of the fall and spring with these fall matches.  I look forward to everyone competing tomorrow to finish the weekend strong and look forward to seeing Chelsea compete to win her flight as well!"
 
Singles
Sawyer shined in singles play, grabbing two wins to advance to Sunday's main draw final in the Ut Prosim flight. Sawyer began the day by defeating West Virginia's Paula Goetz 6-4, 6-1 before she earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar.

Gracey Hirsch opened the day with a win in the main draw of the Service singles flight, defeating Delaware's Annie Jasluski 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. She then fell to JMU's Amanda Nord, 6-2, 6-3.

Gabby O'Gorman, also competing in the Ut Prosim flight, dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match to Liberty's Lara Soares.  She rebounded with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Appalachian State's Maria Jose Zacarias in extra match action.

Samantha Smith, competing in the main draw of the Honor singles flight, dropped her match 6-1, 6-2 to James Madison's Daniela Voloh. She rebounded with a 6-1, 6-3 win over VCU's Kanako Yano in extra match action.

Frederikke Svarre fell 6-2, 6-4 to Anastasia Belyaeva in the back draw of the Honors singles flight. She then advanced in her extra match action after defeating Delaware's Adetayo Adetunji 6-2, 1-0 ret. in a shortened match.

Sydney Weinberg dropped a 6-0, 6-3 singles match to Iowa State's Annabella Bonadonna in the main draw of the Leadership flight. In extra matches, Weinberg suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to VCU's Noumea Witmus.

Olivia Rohrbacher opened her Duty singles flight action with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Marshall's Liz Stefacic. She then dropped a 7-5, 6-3 battle to Regiie Espindola of Iowa State in extra match action.
 
Doubles
The Penn State doubles team of Rohrbacher/Ryan punched their ticket to Sunday's back draw final thanks to an 8-2 win over Delaware's Adetunjl/Jasulski.  

The duo of O'Gorman and Sawyer squared off against JMU's Voloh/Amos in consolation doubles action, winning by a score of 8-6 to advance to Sunday action.

Svarre and Smith fell 8-6 in the main draw of the Loyalty doubles flight to JMU's Afanasyeva/Petersen. Wienberg/Hirch dropped an 8-5 match in the Sacrifice doubles main draw to West Virginia's Caourteau/Rosiello.

The Nittany Lions will conclude action at the Hokie Invite Sunday.
