Penn State Doubles Duo Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va.-- The Penn State women's tennis team shined in doubles play today, capturing four wins and the pair of Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) heading to quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions also continued their success in singles, with two players advancing in the main draw.

"There were a few times today where we could have gotten down and things could have gotten away from us, but we dug in at some key times and that led to victories," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We can still get a big tougher in some areas, but overall today was good in many areas. We have a lot of tennis ahead tomorrow and I look forward to us building on today."

Singles

Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) faced off against Saint Joseph's Amanda Nava, falling in a tight three-set match, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4.

Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia), defeated Richmond's Kiana Marshall, 6-4. 7-5.

Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) took on Virginia's Meghan Kelly, falling 6-2, 6-4.

Svarre fell to Virginia's Camille Favero, 6-0, 6-1.

Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) defeated Hampton's Yulia Kapitanova, 6-3, 6-3.

In extra matches, Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.) defeated Virginia's Lizzie Baker, 6-1, 6-1.

In extra matches, Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia) fell to Virginia's Maya Das, 6-2, 6-2.

O'Gorman and Smith advanced in the main draw for singles, and will continue on with play tomorrow. Hanley, Sawyer and Svarre will continue on with singles play tomorrow in the back draw.

Doubles

Rohrbacher/Svarre took on George Washington's Maria Siopach/Melis Bayrataroglu winning, 8-3. They then defeated Virginia Tech's Natalie Novotna/Rita Pinto, 8-4. The duo advance to the quarterfinals, playing tomorrow.

Weinberg/Ryan got things started with a win over George Washington's Victoria Kogan/Elena Schneider, 8-6. They then took on, Virginia's Amber O'Dell/Chloe Gullickson, falling 8-3.

Hanley/Smith pulled out a tight match against West Virginia's Anastasiia Bovolskaya/Giovanna Caputo, 8-7(7). The duo then fell to Virginia's Meghan Kelley/Sofia Munera, 8-2.
