Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Play at ITA Regionals

LYNCHBURG, Va.-- The Penn State women's tennis team completed play at the ITA Atlantic Regionals, hosted by Liberty University. The Nittany Lions recorded eight singles wins and six doubles wins throughout the tournament.

Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) was the final Nittany Lion in play at regionals today. She took on the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Virginia's Meghan Kelly in the quarterfinals of the singles main draw. Smith fell to Kelly, 6-0, 6-4.

"Samantha Smith had a strong tournament and gave all she had today," said head coach Chris Cagle. "She made a great adjustment in the second set which created a number of opportunities for her to take the set. I was really proud of how she competed all weekend. Great teams have that carry over effect where when one player does it, then another player sees they can do it as well. That is my expectation going forward. Next up will be our last fall tournament at UNC, so now we will rest and then start the preparation phase."

The Nittany Lions will have the weekend off from competition before traveling to the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by UNC from Nov. 2-4. This will mark Penn State's final fall tournament before the spring season.
