Men’s Soccer to Play Final Road Match of Regular Season at Maryland Tuesday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's soccer team remains on the road for its final away game of the regular season. The Nittany Lions will face Maryland in College Park, Md. on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., live on the Big Ten Network.

PENN STATE AGAINST MARYLAND
The Nittany Lions and the Terrapins have met 46 times in program history with Penn State trailing the series, 17-24-5. Penn State has never beat Maryland in Big Ten conference play (the Terps joined the conference in 2014).
 
SCOUTING MARYLAND
The Maryland Terrapins near the end of the regular season with a 6-5-3 overall record and a 3-3-0 record in conference play.
 
Freshman William James Herve, senior Amar Sejdic and junior Paul Bin pace the Terps with eight points each. Sejdic leads all scorers with four goals while fellow senior Chase Gasper is the team-leader in assists with five. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair has played all 14 games in net for the Terps, recording 49 saves with a 0.74 goals against average. St. Clair and the defense have also posted seven saves.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Penn State men's soccer team battled with a talented James Madison team on the road, but ultimately fell late in the game, 1-0, Saturday, Oct. 20 at Sentara Park.
 
The Dukes held on to possession for most of the first half, testing junior goalkeeper Arie Ammann and the rest of the Nittany Lion defense. Ammann and the squad responded to the JMU offensive attack, with Ammann making four huge saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
 
The crossbar was on Penn State's team in the second half, after back-to-back Duke chances hit off the post in the 59th minute. The Dukes offense continued putting pressure on Penn State throughout the half, and were able to score the game-winner in the 86th minute after a blocked shot was rebounded by JMU's Carson Jeffris and shot into the bottom-left corner of the net past Ammann. Ammann finished with a career-high six saves in the match.
 
PENN STATE FEATURED ON BIG TEN NETWORK
The Penn State men's soccer team will be featured on the Big Ten Network for the first time in 2018 on Tuesday. Dean Linke and Jason Garey will be on the call.
 
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Penn State men's soccer team has five 2018 opponents ranked in the eighth week (Oct. 16) of the United Soccer Coaches' national poll, with two more receiving votes. Indiana (Sept. 30; L, 0-2) remains in the top-5 at No. 2. Michigan State (Sept. 26; L, 0-1) and Michigan (Sept. 21; T, 1-1 2OT) check in at No. 13 and 18, respectively. UCF (Aug. 24; L, 1-2 2OT) remains in the No. 19 spot. Rhode Island (Aug. 31; L, 0-1) moves into the top-25 to check in at No. 23 after receiving votes the previous week. JMU (Oct. 20) and Oregon State (Sept. 3; L, 0-1) received votes in this week's poll.
 
BIG TEN TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO GRAND PARK
The Big Ten men's and women's soccer tournament semifinal and championship games will return to Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. for the 2018 season, as announced by the conference on Sept. 27.
 
The men's tournament will start with quarterfinal games being played on campus Nov. 3-4. Play will commence at Grand Park on Friday, Nov. 9 with two semifinals and will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 11 with the championship game.
 
Kickoff times and television coverage for all Big Ten men's and women's soccer tournament games will be announced at a later date.
 
NEXT TIME OUT
Penn State men's soccer returns to Jeffrey Field for the final game of the regular season, hosting Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is slated for a 4 p.m. start. The game will also mark Senior Day as Penn State will honor the Nittany Lions seniors immediately following the game.
