GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Nittany Lions sit in the top 10 among individuals after the second round as Penn State men's golf finished Saturday in second place at the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate. Senior Ryan Dornes fired a 69 with five birdies in the second round for a first-day total 142 to tie for second place.
"Charles got us rolling in round one with a great score and Ryan Dornes played great today after a tough couple holes to start the day," said Penn State head men's golf coach Greg Nye. "Without ever seeing the golf course due to a washed out practice round, the guys overall worked super hard today to stay in the hunt."
Senior Charles Huntzinger made an eagle and had six birdies in his first round of play and at the end of the day Saturday was one shot behind Dornes at 143 (66-77+143). He is in a tie for sixth while senior JD Hughes is tied for 10th and even after two rounds with a 144. (74-70=144).
Junior Ryan Davis had four birdies on the day and wound up at six-over 150 (75-75=150) and in a tie for 33rd. Junior Alec Bard recorded five birdies on the day and is tied for 70th (81+76=157).
Heavy rains on Friday night affected play Saturday morning and Penn State led the field after the first round, even at 288, and carded a 2-over 290 for a team total 578. Host institution UNCG shot 5-under in the second round to grab the lead after day one at 571 (289-282=571).
Competing as an individual in this tournament, Nittany Lion sophomore Louis Olsakovsky shot a 156 (77-79=156) to finish Saturday in a tie for 66th.
