ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Penn State women's soccer team is heading home to Happy Valley with six points after completing a weekend sweep in Michigan. The Nittany Lions tallied a 2-1 win over the Michigan Wolverines in comeback fashion Sunday afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium.
After giving up a goal to Michigan's (7-7-0, 3-4-0 Big Ten) Sarah Stratigakis in the ninth minute of play, the Nittany Lions (9-5-0, 5-2-0 Big Ten) scored twice in the final 33:21 of regulation to capture the victory.
With the first 45 minutes of play in the books, Michigan held a 9-3 shot advantage over Penn State. The Nittany Lions then flipped the switch during the final 45 minutes of regulation, as they outshot the Wolverines, 7-2. After allowing four shots on goal during the first half, Penn State only gave up one shot on goal in the second half.
Kristin Schnurr (Bristow, Va.), who netted both goals in the 2-1 overtime win on Friday night at Michigan State stepped up once again in the 67th minute, as she netted her seventh goal of the season. On the goal, Charlotte Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) played the ball to Schnurr, who then fired a shot from 12 yards out to even the match at 1-1.
Continuing to press on offense, Frankie Tagliaferri (Colts Neck, N.J.) put Penn State in front of Michigan, 2-1, in the 83rd minute. On the goal, Shea Moyer (Wyomissing, Pa.) found Tagliaferri, who then placed a shot into the upper-right corner of the net from 12 yards out.
Following Tagliaferri's sixth goal of the season at 82:08, the Nittany Lion defense did not allow Michigan to tally a shot attempt securing the victory for the Blue & White.
In net, junior Amanda Dennis (San Diego, Calif.) made four saves en route to her ninth win of the season.
The Nittany Lions return home to host Maryland on Friday, Oct. 12. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Jeffrey Field.
