No. 6 Men's Hockey Earns Shootout Victory Over Wisconsin Following a 3-3 Draw

MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) roofed a shot in the sixth round of a shootout on Friday evening to give No. 6 Penn State the extra point following a 3-3 tie against Wisconsin in Big Ten Conference action at the Kohl Center.

The Nittany Lions improve to 10-3-1 on the year and 2-2-1-1 in Big Ten play while the Badgers collect their third-straight draw moving to 5-7-3 overall and 1-3-3-1 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wisconsin opened the scoring as Brock Caufield redirected a shot over the left shoulder of Nittany Lion net-minder Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) off Tyler Inamoto's initial wrister from the right point for the 1-0 edge at 6:15 of the first period.
  • Penn State responded as sophomore Cole Hults (Stoughton, Wis.) sent the puck behind the net where junior Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) collected it and curled the puck on net before ripping home his own rebound over the glove of Badger goaltender Daniel Lebedeff for the 1-1 score at 12:33 of the opening stanza.
  • The Nittany Lions then grabbed the lead early in the middle frame as sophomore Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) sprung junior Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ontario) in on a breakaway and he used a nifty forehand-backhand move and slipped the puck past the right pad of Lebedeff for the 2-1 lead just 79 seconds into the period.
  • The Badgers evened the score as Max Zimmer was able to finish off a cross-ice feed from Seamus Malone for the 2-2 score at 10:03 of the second period.
  • Wisconsin the regained the lead as Caufield cashed in his second of the night shotting back post from the right slot while Jones was coming across the crease for the 3-2 advantage at 14:23 of the second period.
  • Barratt found the equalizer this time as Limoges sprung him on a breakaway of his own and he buried a shot from the slot over the blocker of Lebedeff for the 3-3 score at 18:43 of the stanza.
  • After a scoreless third period, the teams headed to a 5-on-5 overtime frame that also ended with the score tied 3-3 and after a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period the game headed to a shootout.
  • Sean Dhooghe scored for Wisconsin in the third round of the shootout and his goal was answered down the other end by Folkes and following three more saves by Jones it was Limoges who finished the game as he got Lebedeff down and roofed one over his blocker to secure the extra point.
