UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's basketball team came out on the short end of a game of runs as Ohio State dealt the Lady Lions a tough 76-71 overtime loss Thursday night in Big Ten action at the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Lady Lions use a 28-2 run to turn a six-point deficit into an 18-point lead during a 10-minute stretch in the third and fourth quarters. Ohio State answered back with a 22-4 streak in the final six minutes of the game to force overtime, before outscoring the Lady Lions 9-4 in the extra frame.
Senior guard Teniya Page scored in double-digits for the 34th-straight game and 95th time in her career as she led the squad with 19 points. Senior Amari Carter and freshman Karisma Ortiz added 12 points apiece, while junior Siyeh Frazier tallied 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An OSU three-pointer opened the scoring before five points from Ortiz helped Penn State rattle off a 10-2 run to take an early 10-5 advantage just over four minutes into the opening quarter. The Buckeyes answered right back with eight of the next 10 points to pull back in front, 13-12, a minute later.
- The lead changed hands twice in the final minutes of the opening term, but Ohio State held a two-point edge, 20-18, after the first 10 minutes of play.
- The Buckeyes scored the first five points of the second quarter as the OSU lead reached 25-18, but four-straight points from junior Jaida Travascio-Green and a pair of big three-pointers from Carter and Ortiz comprised a 9-2 Lady Lion run over the next 1:47 to knot the score at 27-27.
- The teams cooled off a bit in the final five minutes of the half, shooting a combined 6-for-15 from the floor. Ortiz and Carter accounted for Penn State's final eight points of the quarter, but the Buckeyes were able to take a two-point lead, 37-35, into the break.
- Ohio State scored the first six points of the second half to extend its edge to 43-35, but the Lady Lions roared back with a 19-2 run over the final seven minutes. Six different Lady Lions scored as PSU went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe, held OSU to a 1-for-8 clip from the field, and forced four turnovers during the streak.
- The dominant final seven minutes of the third quarter put the Lady Lions on top 54-45 heading into the fourth term.
- Page hit three-straight three-pointers to open the fourth quarter as Penn State capped its 28-2 streak and stretched its lead to 18 at 63-45 with 7:01 to play.
- Ohio State didn't back down, as the Buckeyes answered right back with a 22-4 streak over the final six minutes of regulation. Page had a shot at a last-second game-winner, but the attempt was blocked as the game headed to overtime tied at 67-67.
- A Page jumper opened OT and a free throw from sophomore Alisia Smith followed as the Lady Lion defense kept OSU scoreless for the first 3:46 of the extra frame. The Buckeyes' Carly Santoro drained a trey at the 1:14 mark to tie the score before Janai Crooms added a layup to put the Buckeyes up 72-70 with 38 seconds to play.
- Page was fouled on Penn State's next possession and made one of two attempts from the charity stripe to put the score at 72-71 with 13.8 seconds on the clock.
- Ohio State's Dorka Juhasz then converted a conventional three-point play to all but seal it, and then added two free throws in the final seconds to cement the 76-71 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Coquese Washington
- "I thought the second half was a tale of two quarters. We had a really good defensive effort in the third quarter and put ourselves in position to finish the game strong. In the fourth quarter, defensively we just had some miscommunications that led to them getting some open shots. Credit to them for knocking those down when they needed to."
- "We have to have a better close defensively in the fourth quarter. That's what we'll get back in the gym and work on tomorrow as we get ready for Maryland on Sunday."
