No. 36 Penn State Welcomes No. 1 Ohio State in Big Ten Showdown

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In its mission to continue its undefeated record at home, No. 36 Penn State men's tennis (6-3) will take on the No. 1 team in the nation and Big Ten rival, Ohio State (15-0) on Friday, March 1 at 4 p.m. in the Indoor Tennis Center.

"There are not many times in your career that you get to play the No. 1 team in the country at your place, so we are definitely excited," head coach Jeff Zinn said. "We need to take advantage of the opportunity and play a perfect match. They are the best team in the nation for a reason and we are going to have to play above and beyond what we've been showing."

LAST TIME OUT

In their most recent match, the Nittany Lions defeated Buffalo, 6-1. The Blue and White took the doubles point before earning five singles wins, including two third set tiebreak victories.

The win moved the Nittany Lions up three spots in ITA team rankings to No. 36.

No. 92 Constant De La Bassetiere (Reims, France) extended his win streak to five matches after defeating Vilhelm Fridell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. He now sits with a 6-1 record at the No. 1 spot.

BREAKING DOWN THE BUCKEYES

Ohio State has been on a dominating tear to start the season, dealing out 11 shutouts. At most, the team has allowed only two points which came against No. 2 Wake Forest on Feb. 18.

The Buckeyes have been at the top spot in ITA team rankings since Feb. 20.

The roster features five ranked singles players, including No. 1 JJ Wolf who is 12-0 in the spring. All three of the Buckeyes' doubles pairs are also ranked in the top 32 spots, including the third-ranked pair of Kyle Seelig and Alex Kobelt.

Penn State has an all-time record of 6-23 against Ohio State. The two teams last met in the 2018 season when the Buckeyes walked away with the shutout win, 7-0.

UP NEXT

The Nittany Lions will travel to the USTA National Campus is Orlando, Fla. to face Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 6 and UCF Friday, March 8. Both matches are slated to start at 6 p.m.
