UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Teniya Page etched herself in the Penn State Lady Lions record book once again this week. The senior guard became the first player in Lady Lions' history to record 2,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists in a career.
Page eclipsed the milestone as the third quarter was winding down on the road against Ohio State Wednesday night. Just days after she recorded her 2,000th point off of an Alisia Smith miss, she found Smith open in the paint for her 400th assist. Page finished the night with 22 points and seven assists in a 78-73 defeat that was down to the wire.
Although the game didn't go the way the team hoped, head coach Coquese Washington was as excited as anyone to see Page make history.
"I was very happy for her that she was able to achieve that milestone," she said. "Her work ethic and her dedication to her craft are the things that made that possible."
Washington elaborated on how much work Page has put in throughout her career at Penn State.
"She's a kid that when the lights aren't on and nobody is in the stands, she's in there perfecting her craft," she continued. "She is somebody who has been willing and dedicated enough to put the work in so that she can perform on gameday."
While the Lady Lion guard is now one of six Penn State players to tally 2,000 points and the only one to do so with 400 rebounds and assists, she is still as modest as they come.
"It is a lot of recognition, but I don't like the attention," Page said. "Everybody keeps walking up to me and saying congrats, which is fine and I appreciate it, but I don't like that much attention."
Her combination of level or skill and humbleness is admirable. On Wednesday Page also recorded her 39th straight game in double figures and her 100th game of her career in that category.
Even with all of her accomplishments on the court, when reflecting on her career at Penn State, Page's most memorable moments are actually off of the hardwood.
"My favorite part would be the connections that I have made with some of my teammates," she said. "Some that have graduated and the ones that are here now."
It is clear that Page has enjoyed her time on and off the floor as a member of the Lady Lions and with the milestones she has eclipsed, her name will be one that circulates through the Bryce Jordan Center for years to come.
In terms of Page's legacy, Coach Washington may have summed it up the best.
"I don't think there's any doubt that she'll leave here as one of the best scorers to ever put on a Penn State jersey."
Although the Lady Lions didn't leave the floor with a win against the Buckeyes, they were left with a moment they will always remember. Penn State fans won't forget Page's decorated career any time soon.
Page and the Lady Lions will be back in action on Sunday in the Bryce Jordan Center against Michigan with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. This Big Ten matchup will be Penn State's 13th annual Play4Kay Game Benefitting Pink Zone.
