COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The No. 49 Penn State women's tennis team fell in Big Ten action to No. 13 Ohio State, 6-1. Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) was a bright spot for the Nittany Lions, knocking off No. 62 Kolie Allen in singles play.
Penn State moves to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while Ohio State improves to 12-2 and 1-0 in the Big Ten. This match marks the end of a seven match road stretch for the Nittany Lions.
"Not the outcome we were looking for today," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We created a number of opportunities, but we need to do a better job in finishing more in these moments. We will use the feedback from today to get better this week and prepare for next weekend's match."
DOUBLES
Ohio State took the doubles point, leading Penn State to fall behind 1-0 early.
Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) and Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) took over the No. 1 spot in doubles for the second time this season. They battled hard against No. 19 Isabelle Boulais and Shiori Fukuda, and were up 3-2 when play was suspended.
SINGLES
Sawyer needed a third set against No. 62 Allen, but was able to get the win, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. This was Sawyer's first career win over a ranked opponent. Sawyer improves to 9-3 in singles play for the Nittany Lions.
Smith and Hanley were able to push their matches to a third set as well, but came up just short.
