Women's Hockey Battles Back For 3-3 Tie In Regular Season Finale

ST. CHARLES, Missouri – The Penn State women's hockey team fought its way from behind in the second and third periods to tie Lindenwood 3-3 in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Lindenwood Ice Arena.
 
Shea Nelson opened the scoring for the Nittany Lions in the opening period, followed by clutch goals from Brooke Madsen in the second and Jessica Adolfsson in the third to force the tie.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period

  • Penn State struck first with the opening goal 4:45 into the first period. Shea Nelson was credited for her fifth goal of the season with assists to Meike Meilleur and Sophie Slattery.
  • Jenna Brenneman made a big stop on a breakaway by Lindenwood to keep the Lions off the board past the halfway point in the first period.
  • Both teams had chances on the power play but did not convert.
  • Shots on goal in the period: Penn State 9, Lindenwood 7
  • Score after period: Penn State 1, Lindenwood 0

 
Second Period

  • Lindenwood struck quickly in the second period to tie the game just 39 seconds in. Shannon Morris-Reade knotted the game 1-1 for the Lions.
  • Penn State's Christi Vetter took a five-minor major penalty for slashing at 4:35 to give Lindenwood a five-minute power play. The Lions scored once on the advantage at 6:35 courtesy of Nicole Guagliardo to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Late in the period, the Nittany Lions were able to tie the score at two thanks to Brooke Madsen. Her even-strength goal at 15:31 was assisted by Anna Promersberger.

Third Period

  • Another power play goal by Lindenwood a little over halfway through the third period allowed the Lions to retake a one-goal advantage. Sierra Burt was the goal scorer at 11:05.
  • The Nittany Lions once again found a way to fight back and tie the game 3-3 at 14:24. Jessica Adolfsson netted her fourth of the season with assists to Katie McMillan and Madsen.
  • The Nittany Lions took the last three shot attempts of the period but couldn't find the go-ahead marker which sent the game to overtime.

  • Score after regulation: Penn State 3, Lindenwood 3

 
Overtime

  • The overtime period saw only seven combined shot attempts for both teams, with the Nittany Lions having the only two on target.
  • Shots on goal in overtime: Penn State 2, Lindenwood 0
  • Final score: Penn State 3, Lindenwood 3

 
GAME NOTES

  • Brooke Madsen's two-point effort was her first multi-point effort of the season. This weekend marked the first time she scored in back-to-back games since Oct. 29 and Nov. 3 of 2017.
  • Jessica Adolfsson's score was her first career goal scored at even-strength. She had three power play goals entering the game.
  • Shea Nelson added to her season goal total with her fifth score which continues to build a career high for the sophomore.
  • Jenna Brenneman added to her program record for games played and started by a Nittany Lion goaltender with her 32nd game played and 32nd start. She made 20 saves, marking the 24th game this season she's made at least 20 saves.
  • The Nittany Lions have played in 10 overtime periods this season and 25 overtime periods over the last two seasons, the highest total in nation over that span.

 
NEXT UP

  • The Nittany Lions head to Buffalo, New York for the CHA Tournament next week. The conference award banquet will be held Tuesday, March 5, followed by the first round of the tournament Wednesday, March 6.
  • Penn State will be the fiourth seed in the tournament and will play fifth-seeded RIT in the opening round at a time yet to be determined. The Nittany Lions are 3-1 against the Tigers this season.
