Penn State Set to Host Nebraska in B1G Home Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team will host its first Big Ten match of the season when Nebraska comes to town. The Nittany Lions (9-4, 1-1 B1G) are set to take on the Huskers (8-10, 0-2 B1G) on Sunday, March 24 at 9 a.m. in the Indoor Tennis Center in the annual Pink Zone match.

Following the women's match at 9 a.m. the men's team will be hosting a doubleheader against Cornell and JMU.

"We are excited to be back home this weekend after being on the road for a long stretch," said head coach Chris Cagle. "It is also exciting with us returning home for a Big Ten matchup and we know Nebraska will be a tough opponent. We have an earlier start time at 9 a.m. so we hope folks come out and support the team with it being our Pink Zone match. Sunday will be a great day of tennis with both the women's and men's teams being at home so come out and see some great tennis!"

LAST TIME OUT

Penn State fell in Big Ten action to then-No. 13 Ohio State, 6-1. Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) defeated then-No. 62 Kolie Allen to claim her first win over a ranked opponent.

SCOUTING THE HUSKERS

Nebraska is 0-2 in Big Ten play with a 7-0 loss to No. 23 Michigan and a 4-3 loss to Michigan State. Before taking on the Nittany Lions on Sunday, the Huskers will take on No. 14 Ohio State on Friday.

Claire Reifeis leads Nebraska with 11 singles wins coming from the No. 1 and No. 2 spot. The duo of Marina Cozac and Vasanti Shinde have a team-high eight doubles wins, all coming on court No. 1.

SAMMI SMITH SUPERSTAR

Against then-No. 48 VCU, junior captain Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) claimed career singles win No. 50.

Smith has been a mainstay in the lineup through all three of her years on campus, and this season was named captain alongside Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.).

NINE WINS

Penn State has nine wins to its name at just over the halfway point of the season. The last time Penn State reached nine wins in a season was in 2015, when the team went 13-11.

UP NEXT

The Nittany Lions will hit the road again for two Big Ten matches, against Michigan and Michigan State. Penn State will take on Michigan on Friday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. and Michigan State on Sunday, March 31 at 1 p.m.
