EAST LANSING, Mich.-- The Penn State women's tennis team fell to Michigan State, 4-2, in Big Ten action Sunday afternoon. Despite the Nittany Lion's (10-6, 2-3 B1G) success in doubles, the Spartans (12-9, 3-4 B1G) captured the match win in singles play.
"We did a good job today in the doubles play in pressure situations," said head coach Chris Cagle. "The singles was the reverse of the doubles and my expectations for this team are higher than we performed today. We have the opportunity to reflect on some things to get better for Minnesota on Friday."
DOUBLES
After dropping the first doubles match early, the Nittany Lions pushed courts one and three to 5-5, winning out on both to pull out the doubles point.
Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) prevailed over Lauren Lemonds and Davina Nguyen, 7-5.
Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) clinched the doubles point, defeating Emily Metcalf and Maja Pietrowicz, 7-6(5).
SINGLES
O'Gorman dropped only two games in her straight set win over Samantha Memije, 6-1, 6-1. With that win, O'Gorman now has 11 wins in the spring, to lead the Nittany Lions.
Sawyer had her match go unfinished, but was leading Davina Nguyen, 7-6, 1-4 when play ended.
UP NEXT
The Nittany Lions will return home to host Minnesota on Friday, April 5 at 5 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m.
