Women’s Tennis Drops Match to Indiana, 5-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Penn State women's tennis team fell to Indiana, 5-2, in Big Ten action, Friday night. After playing the doubles point outside and getting started in singles, a downpour forced the match to be completed in the Indoor Tennis Center.

Penn State drops to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten, while Indiana improves to 14-9 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten.

"We did not capitalize enough tonight on the opportunities we had, but we also didn't fold our tent and go home when we were down," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We had chances and the margins are slim, we talk about that every match. It's definitely not a time for us to hang our head or get down. It's time for us to take the takeaways from this match that we need to, to get a win on Sunday."

DOUBLES

Penn State dropped the doubles point, going 0-2 with court No. 3 left unfinished. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) had their match against Michelle McKamey and Somer Henry go unfinished and were down, 5-4, when play ended.

Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) and Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) were down 5-0 against No. 64 Madison Appel and Jelly Bozovic. The pair battled back to bring it to 5-4 but were ultimately downed by Indiana's ranked duo, 6-4.

SINGLES

The Nittany Lions grabbed two wins in singles from Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Sawyer. Svarre also pushed her match to a third set, but came up just short.

Smith made quick work of McKamey, rattling off a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-1. Sawyer finished her match within seconds of Smith, defeating Caitlin Bernard, 7-5, 6-0.
