Nittany Lions Fall to No. 31 Northwestern, 4-2

EVANSTON, Ill.-- The Penn State women's tennis team closed out its regular season schedule against No. 31 Northwestern, falling 4-2. The Nittany Lions again pushed matches to a third set, but failed to prevail over the Wildcats in Big Ten action, Sunday afternoon at the Vandy Christie Center.

The Nittany Lions finish with a record of 11-11 overall and 3-8 in the Big Ten. Northwestern improves to 14-9 overall and 7-4 in conference. 

"When you look at our season, you can see the improvements within our team and program," said head coach Chris Cagle. "We lost a close one on the road to a good Northwestern team today, but the competitiveness of our matches shows we have come a long way this year. I look forward to continuing that next season!"

DOUBLES

Penn State failed to secure the doubles point, going 1-2 in matches. Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Chelsea Sawyer (Clemmons, N.C.) took down Caroline Pozo and Rheeya Doshi, 6-2.

No. 79 Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia) and Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio) pushed their match to a tiebreak, coming up just short against No. 57 Clarissa Hand and Lee Or, (6)6-7.

SINGLES

Sawyer and Svarre each grabbed singles wins on the day while junior captains, Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) each pushed their matches to a third set.

Sawyer defeated Doshi, 6-2, 6-3. Svarre handled Caroline Pozo, 7-6, 6-0. Smith had her match against Or go unfinished at 2-6, 7-6, 2-4.

Penn State closed out its season today and will look ahead to the fall of 2019 to prepare for another competitive year.
