Nittany Lions Complete Day One of the Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Nittany Lions kicked off competition at the 125th running of the Penn Relays on Thursday. Thursday marked the first of three days of competition for the Nittany Lions in Philadelphia.

In the men's and women's 3000m steeplechase, the Nittany Lions set three personal-best performances. 

James Abrahams continued to cut time off his time in the men's 3000m steeplechase with his performance on Thursday night. Abrahams consistent pace allowed him to shave nearly three seconds off his previous best mark in the event. Abrahams clocked a time of 8:54.48, placing him fourth in the steeplechase event. Abrahams rose to fifth in the Big Ten with his performance. Ryan Barton also finished the steeplechase with a personal-best time.

Continuing the trend of personal-best marks in the steeplechase, Marissa Sheva also set a new personal-best in the women's 3000m steeplechase.  Sheva finished the race in a time of 10:34.87 to set her new personal-best in the event. 

The women's 4x100m team of Brooke-Lynn Williams, Amariah Thomas, Kiara Lester, and Alexis Holmes advanced to the Championship Invitational with their performance on Thursday. The 4x100 squad ran 45.34 to finish third overall in the qualifying heats. The top-nine fastest teams qualified for the Championship Invitational on Friday at 12:55 p.m.

The Nittany Lions finished with a total of eight top-10 finishes on the first day of competition at the Penn Relays.

Penn State is scheduled to compete in 14 events on day two of the Penn Relays on Friday.
