Sprint Medley Relay Highlights Saturday's Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Nittany Lions battled through numerous weather delays on the second day of the 125th Penn Relays.  Saturday will be the final day of competition for the Nittany Lions on the weekend.

The women's sprint medley relay team highlighted Friday's events by setting a new school record in the event and winning the Sprint Medley Championship of America.

Brooke-Lynn Williams and Kiara Lester got the Nittany Lions off to a great start in the two, two hundred-meter portions of the relay race. Alexis Holmes gave the Nittany Lions the lead as she ran the 400-meter section of the race. Running the anchor and the 800-meter section of the race, Danae Rivers never relinquished the lead. The 800-meter indoor national champion concluded the record-setting performance, crossing the tape in 3:45.25. The previous record in the event was 3:47.80 set in 2018. 

Following up a strong performance in the 4x100 yesterday during qualifying, the Nittany Lions 4x100 team turned in a top-five all-time performance in the history of Penn State.  Brooke-Lynn Williams, Amariah Thomas, Kiara Lester, and Alexis Holmes ran 44.59 to move into fourth place all-time at Penn State in the event.  This time also ranks first in the Big Ten for the Nittany Lions.

The Nittany Lions had a pair of runners qualify for Saturday's finals of the 100-meter dash.  Justin Ofotan and Brooke-Lynn Williams each moved on to the championship final in the men's and women's 100-meter dash. Williams set a new personal-best, clocking 11.75 to advance to Saturday's final.  Justin Ofotan also turned in a season-best time of 10.48 during the first heat of the men's qualifying heats. 

Ben Peterson had another solid performance in the men's shot put.  Peterson placed third in the men's shot put championship, throwing 59-5.75 (18.13m). Peterson is currently 7th in the Big Ten in the men's shot put event.

The Nittany Lions wrap up competition on Saturday with 13 scheduled events.
