BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 10 seeded Penn State softball team (24-32, 7-16 Big Ten) put up a fight as its done all season long, but fell to No. 7 seed and tournament host Indiana (36-20, 12-13 Big Ten), 4-2, Thursday evening in the first round of the 2019 Big Ten Softball Tournament at Andy Mohr Field.
Penn State got on the board first, taking the early 2-0 lead in the opening frame after a two-run home run by junior Destiny Weber, her fourth of the season.
The offense was then stalled by Indiana for the remainder of the game, with its lone hit after the first inning by Claire Swedberg with a single through the right side in the third.
Indiana played the small ball in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead after three, scoring three runs on four hits, only one of which left the infield, and an error.
In the circle, freshmen Bailey Parshall and Kylee Lingenfelter each struck out two.
The Nittany Lions finished the 2019 season with a 24-32 overall record, their best record since the 2016 season. The team hit a total of 49 home runs, a new program record.
Parshall completed her rookie campaign with 184 strikeouts, tied for eighth all-time in the program record books for strikeouts in a single season with Lisa Akamine in the 2012 season.
