Men’s Golf Leads Region With Three Honorees

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – For the fifth-straight year, Penn State men's golf leads the Northeast Region with the most honorees on the PING All-Northeast Region team. Three Nittany Lions have been selected for accolades, tied for the most individuals from one institution in the region. The 152 2019 All-Region selections, representing six areas of the country, were announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America Saturday.

Charles Huntzinger, who left his mark on the program as Penn State's all-time scoring leader with a 72.07 average, earned PING All-Northeast Region honors for the fourth time. He is one of only six Nittany Lions in program history with that distinction and joins Dirk Ayers (1992-1996), Matt Abbott (1997-2001), Robert Rohanna (2004-2008), Kevin Foley (2006-2010) and Cole Miller (2015-18) as Nittany Lions who were also four-time honorees.

With Huntzinger's selection, Penn State now has back-to-back four-year honorees for the first time ever in Huntzinger (2016-2019) and Miller (2015-18). Under head coach Greg Nye, 78 Nittany Lions have garnered All-Northeast Region honors since 1992-93.

The 25-player All-Northeast Region team included JD Hughes, (Carlisle, Pennsylvania) and rising senior Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, New Jersey), both with their third such honors in their three-year careers at Penn State.

Hughes led the Nittany Lions in scoring average in 2018-19. He recorded five of team's top 11 single-round scores, including his career best, a 7-under 65 at the Linger Longer Invitational, and 6-under 66 at Rod Myers Invitational to help Penn State win the 2018 RMI tournament title last fall.

Davis posted three top-10 finishes last season, including the top Nittany Lion finish (3rd) in the 2019 Rutherford Intercollegiate. He recorded his career low 66 in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in October 2018.

In each of the last five years, Penn State has led all schools in the Northeast Region with the highest number of selections. The Northeast Region, covering the geographic area from Maine to Washington, D.C., comprises 56 aNCAA Division I programs and has the largest number of schools of any region. Among Big Ten Conference institutions, Illinois had four all-region honorees in the Midwest Region with the Nittany Lions with three in their region.
