Softball Trio Garners Big Ten Season Accolades

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Three members of the Penn State softball team were honored by the Big Ten with season awards, as announced by the conference office Wednesday. Toni Polk earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors while Chelsea Bisi was named to the All-Freshman Team and Madison Shaffer was honored with the Sportsmanship Award.

Polk garnered Big Ten honors for the first time in her career in her final season playing for the Blue & White. The Niagara Falls, N.Y., native has started all 55 games in right field for the Nittany Lions and is batting .324 on the season. Polk leads the team in hits (58) and triples (3) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (13).

The outfielder has two program career top-15 marks with 102 career runs scored and 16 career home runs.

Polk follows classmate Tori Dubois' Second Team honors in 2018.

Bisi was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The Latrobe, Pa., native has had a standout rookie campaign, batting .319 and leading the team in RBI (37) while tying for the team lead with Polk with 13 home runs.

Bisi and Polk's 13 home runs contributed to Penn State breaking the program record for home runs in a single season with 48 while the duo is tied for third in the record books for home runs in a single season.

Shaffer received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Penn State. The New Castle, Pa., native made 18 appearances during the 2019 season with 29 strikeouts in 35.2 innings in the circle.

Penn State heads to Bloomington, Indiana, for the 2019 Big Ten Softball Tournament. The No. 10 seeded Nittany Lions will face the No. 7 seeded tournament hosts Indiana in the first round on Thursday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m.
