POSTGAME NOTES: Penn State vs. Pittsburgh

 
TEAM

  • In the 100th all-time meeting, Penn State improves to 53-43-4 against Pitt.
  • The Nittany Lions moved to 19-6 all-time at home against Pittsburgh.
  • Penn State is now 170-95-12 all-time against Pennsylvania schools, including 93-47-5 against Pennsylvania FBS teams (Pittsburgh, Temple).
  • The Nittany Lions have won 16-straight non-conference regular-season home games.
  • Penn State has won 10 consecutive regular-season non-conference games, dating back to a win over Temple in 2016.
  • Penn State's 17 points in victory were the fewest by the Nittany Lions in a win since a 13-7 win against Indiana in 2014.
  • Penn State allowed 24 rushing yards, tied for the third-fewest given up by the Nittany Lions under James Franklin with 24 given up to UCF in 2014. Two of the four lowest rushing yards allowed under Franklin have been established this season, with 4 yards allowed to Idaho and 24 today.

  • In his first career start, RB Journey Brown's 85-yard run was the second-longest non-scoring run in school history. Blair Thomas had a 92-yard rush vs. Syracuse in 1986.
  • Brown's 85-yard run is a career long. Brown's previous career long was a 23-yard rush earlier this season vs. Idaho.
  • Brown's 85-yard rush was the longest rush by a Nittany Lion since Saquon Barkley had a 92-yard dash against Washington in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl.
  • Brown had a career-high 109 yards on a career-best10 carries. It marks his first career 100-yard game. His previous highs were six rushes against Buffalo and 38 yards vs. Idaho.
  • It was also Penn State's second run of 80 or more yards this season, joining an 81-yard run by Devyn Ford against Idaho.

 
Sean Clifford

  • QB Sean Clifford had a career-high 30 pass attempts. His previous high was 23 vs. Idaho earlier this season.
  • Clifford threw for 222 yards for his third-straight 200-yard game, which is tied for 18th on Penn State's career list.
  • Clifford completions included a 53-yard connection with KJ Hamler and a 40-yard pass to Ricky Slade.
  • Clifford has 14 completions of 20 or more yards this season.

 
Noah Cain

  • RB Noah Cain had his first career reception, a 13-yard grab.

KJ Hamler

  • WR KJ Hamler had three catches, extending his streak to all 16 games of his career with at least one reception.

 
Pat Freiermuth

  • TE Pat Freiermuth had one catch, giving him at least one catch in 15 consecutive games (15 of 16 for his career).
  • With 16 receiving yards, Freiermuth went over the 500-career receiving yard mark.  He now has 508 receiving yards.

Jan Johnson

  • LB Jan Johnson recorded the first full sack of his career in the third quarter. He had a half-sack last season at Pittsburgh.
  • Johnson tied a career-high with a full tackle for loss.  He had two previous performances with a full tackle for loss with the last coming at Michigan in 2018.
  • Johnson forced a fumble in the fourth quarter, his first career forced fumble.

 
Micah Parsons

  • LB Micah Parsons tied a career high with two TFL. He has had two TFL on two prior occasions, the last vs. Buffalo last week.
  • With nine tackles, Parsons reached the 100-tackle mark for his career.
  • Parsons recorded his first career pass breakup in the first quarter.

 
Donovan Johnson

  • CB Donovan Johnson tied a career high in tackles with four. He also had four last season vs. Michigan State.

 
Shane Simmons

  • LB Shane Simmons had four tackles, tying a career high. He had four at Northwestern in 2017.

 
Trent Gordon

  • CB Trent Gordon tied a career high with three tackles. He had three last week vs. Buffalo.

 
Antonio Shelton

  • DT Antonio Shelton tied a career mark with two tackles. He has had two tackles on five previous occasions, the last at Rutgers last season.
  • Shelton matched a career best with a full tackle for loss.  He had a full tackle for loss in three previous games with the last coming against Idaho.

 
Garrett Taylor

  • S Garrett Taylor recorded seven tackles to reach the 100-career tackle mark.  He now has 101 career stops.

 
Ellis Brooks

Jordan Stout

  • K Jordan Stout's 57-yard field goal late in the second quarter broke the Penn State school record. The previous record was held by Chris Bahr, who booted three 55-yard field goals in 1975 at Temple, at Ohio State and at Syracuse.
  • Stout's 57-yard field goal ties the stadium record for longest field goal, equaling the mark established by Gary Homer of Ohio in 1973.
  • Stout's 57-yard field goal is tied for the 12th-longest in Big Ten history. His kick is the longest since Marshall Koehn of Iowa had a 57-yard boot vs. Pittsburgh in 2015.
  • Stout is the first Penn State kicker to have multiple 50-yard field goals since Kevin Kelly had two in 2008. Kelly's two kicks were 52 yards at Syracuse and 50 at Wisconsin.
  • Stout has hit 23 straight touchbacks, including four in today's game.

 
Blake Gillikin

  • P Blake Gillikin averaged 42.4 yards on seven punts.
  • Gillikin landed a career-best six punts (out of seven attempts) inside the 20. He previously had three games with four punts landed inside the 20 with the last coming at Pitt in 2018.
  • The senior dropped one punt inside the 10, landing it at the Pitt 8.
  • He has 77 career punts inside the 20 and 39 inside the 10.
  • Gillikin hit a 53-yard punt in the second quarter, his 44th career punt of more than 50 yards.

 
Jake Pinegar

  • K Jake Pinegar has hit 28 straight extra point attempts after converting both attempts in today's game.
  • Pinegar now has 71 career extra points, ranking 13th all-time in program history.
