WTEN Travels to Cissie Leary and Marliss Gruver Invitationals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –The Alexandra Anghelescu era of Penn State Women's Tennis is set to officially begin on Sept. 20. The Nittany Lions will enter fall tournament play by splitting the team to compete in two separate tournaments spanning Friday-Sunday, Sept. 20-22.

Penn State will enter its first season under Anghelescu with an experienced squad of two seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores. The team will play in seven fall tournaments, beginning with the Cissie Leary and Marliss Gruver Invitationals this weekend. Frederikke Svarre returns as last year's singles leader with 13 dual-match wins while the pairing of Gabby O'Gorman and Olivia Rohrbacher look to lead the doubles charge.
 
Penn State will send Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.), Gracey Hirsch (Cincinnati, Ohio), Olivia Ryan (Victoria, Australia), Sydney Weinberg (Winchester, Mass.), and Hanna Wikberg (Stockholm, Sweden) to Philadelphia, Pa. to battle in the Cissie Leary Invite hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. This will be the second consecutive appearance at the Cissie Leary Invite for Hirsch, Weinberg, and Ryan.
 
This year marks the 23rd-annual Cissie Leary Invitational. The tournament will be held at Penn's Hamlin Tennis Center.
 
The Nittany Lions will also be represented by Gabby O'Gorman (Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia), Olivia Rohrbacher (Sandusky, Ohio), Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.), and Frederikke Svarre (Copenhagen, Denmark) at the Marliss Gruver Invite hosted by Auburn. The event will take place at Auburn's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
 
At the conclusion of the weekend, Penn State will look forward to the Hall of Fame Classic in Williamsburg, Va.
