UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 19 Penn State men's golf team heads to the Bearcat Invitational Monday, Sept. 30-Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati. The Nittany Lions traveled to play at this tournament last fall, but heavy rains cancelled the event just a few holes into the first round.
Coach Greg Nye and the Nittany Lions got a preview of Coldstream during a practice round in 2018 and are looking forward to competing on this course. The par-71, 7,150-yard layout by architect Dick Wilson was modeled after Scotland's Village of Coldstream.
Penn State will be represented by seniors Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), juniors Lukas Clark (Holland, Pa.) and Lou Olsakovsky (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), and freshman Patrick Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.). Sophomore Ryan Lee (Norwood, N.J.) will compete as an individual.
"We understand Coldstream Country Club is in outstanding condition," said Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye. "We got a look at it last year before the rain out and it will be a completely different test of golf than the Duke and Wake courses the last two weeks. Heat indexes are to exceed 100 Monday and Tuesday, and we will need to manage that, but it will be really similar to weather in Carolina."
The 13-team field for the Bearcat Invitational features two other ranked teams with 16th-ranked Louisville and No. 17 Arkansas. Illinois State, Kentucky, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Southern Illinois, Wisconsin and Xavier joined Cincinnati's invitation list.
Host institution Cincinnati, Louisville and Penn State have all competed in the Rod Myers Invitational and the Old Town Club Collegiate this season.
Last week, three Nittany Lions, Bard (209), Clark (208) and Davis (207) carded career-low 54-hole tournament scores at the Old Town Club Collegiate. Bard, Clark and Olsakovsky, had or tied a career low for a single round with a scores of 3-under 67 on the par 70.
A recap will be posted on GoPSUsports.com following the action on both days of competition.
