UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sophomore tight end Pat Freiermuth (Merrimac, Mass.) was selected as the John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week after a stellar outing at Michigan State Oct. 26. This is Freiermuth's second national Tight End of the Week award this season.
Freiermuth was unstoppable in Penn State's 28-7 win over the Spartans, pulling a career-high three touchdown catches. He converted on all five of his targets for 60 yards in East Lansing. Freiermuth is the ninth player (11 occasions), and first tight end, to have at least three touchdown receptions in a game, joining Bobby Engram (twice), Allen Robinson (twice), Freddie Scott, Joe Jurevicius, Deon Butler, Tony Johnson, Graham Zug and DaeSean Hamilton. Freiermuth's seven touchdown catches this season are the most in FBS among tight ends.
With his performance, Freiermuth upped his career touchdown total to 15 to tie Mike Gesicki (2014-17) for the most scores by a tight end and rank ninth all-time at Penn State. Freiermuth also extended his streak to 20 consecutive games with a catch, and 20 of his first 21 career games.
The Nittany Lions are on off this weekend before visiting No. 13 Minnesota Nov. 9. The Nittany Lions' remaining home schedule includes Big Ten games against Indiana (Nov. 15) and Rutgers (Nov. 30 – Senior Day).
