Burke Makes 40 Saves In Loss To #1 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisc.
– The Penn State women's hockey team wrapped up its trip to Wisconsin with a 3-0 loss to the #1/1 Badgers Saturday evening at LaBahn Arena.
 
Penn State (0-2-2) dropped both games of the series to Wisconsin (4-0-0) in the two schools' first-ever meeting in women's hockey.
 
In in her second-straight start, Chantal Burke set another career-best with 40 saves just one night after posting 34 stops for the Nittany Lions.
 
Brooke Madsen and Jessica Adolfsson both led the Nittany Lions with four shots on goal each. Mallory Uihlein blocked a team-best three shots.
 
Daryl Watts scored at the 11:09 mark in the first period to give Wisconsin the 1-0 advantage with assists from Sophie Shirley and Abby Roque. Despite trailing, the Nittany Lions actually posted more shots on goal in the period with 13 to Wisconsin's 10 in the period.
 
In the scoreless second period, the Badgers regained offensive control but were unable to figure out how to get the puck past Burke.
 


 
Burke made 20 saves in the period and kept the Nittany Lions deficit to just one entering the third period.  
 
The Badgers' managed to double their lead 54 seconds into the third period when Caitlin Schneider snuck one between Burke and the goal post. Watts scored her second of the game at 2:31 to extend the Wisconsin lead to three.
 
The Nittany Lions strung together a handful of scoring chances late in the third but were unable to find a goal as time expired.
 
 
GAME NOTES

  • Burke became the first Nittany Lion netminder to make a 40 or more saves in a game since Hannah Ehresmann ('18) stopped 41 shots Feb. 11, 2017 in a shutout win over Lindenwood.
  • Penn State showed good discipline and did not give the Badgers a chance on the power play for the game. The Nittany Lions only committed one penalty that was offset by a Wisconsin penalty at the same time.
  • Penn State finished 0-for-3 on the power play for the game. Wisconsin had a 30-20 edge in the face-off circle and outshot the Nittany Lions 43-22.
  • The Nittany Lions return to State College for their home-opening series next weekend, Oct. 11-12, against RPI.
