UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State softball head coach Amanda Lehotak announced the addition of four signees during the early signing period this week.
The incoming class includes Melody Coombs (Mechanicsville, Md.), Emily Maddock (Kempton, Pa.), Lauren Marcotte (Ellicott City, Md.) and Paige Olson (West Chester, Pa.). Lehotak's newest recruits were tabbed as the No. 23 signing class in the nation by FloSoftball.
"I am so excited to welcome the newest Nittany Lions to Penn State softball," said head coach Amanda Lehotak. "Our staff found high-quality student-athletes and individuals to add to our program and we know they will represent the Blue and White in the best way. We look forward to this class making an immediate impact on the program and continuing our pursuit to have Penn State softball recognized on a national level."
Coombs, a middle infielder from Mechanicsville, Md., is a top-40 overall recruit by both Extra Inning Softball (No. 29) and FloSoftball (No. 36). Coombs currently attends Saint Mary's Ryken High School ahead of her senior season. During the 2018 season, Coombs held a batting average of .507 with 35 hits, including 14 home runs. She was named the WCAC Player of the Year and led the team to a WCAC Championship. Coombs has also earned First Team All-Conference honors every year. She has intentions to major in biomedical engineering with goals of being a doctor.
Maddock, an infielder and outfielder from Kempton, Pa., attends Kutztown Area High School. Ahead of her senior season, Maddock has earned First Team All-County honors the last three seasons, while also being named All-State as a freshman (2017) and junior (2019). Last season she helped the Cougars to both a division and district championship. She also plays varsity basketball for Kutztown Area. Maddock intends to major in sports marketing/management with goals of doing marketing for a sports team after college.
Marcotte, a middle infielder from Ellicott City, Md., comes to Happy Valley from Centennial High School. As a freshman in 2017 she set six school records and one state record with a .703 batting average. Marcotte is a three-time First Team All-County honoree and was also named to the Baltimore Sun first team in 2017. She intends to major in kinesiology with goals of becoming a sports physical therapist.
Olson, an outfielder from West Chester, Pa., currently attends West Chester East High School. Olson is a two-time Pennsylvania second-team member and earned All-Area first team honors in both 2018 and 2019. She was named All-State as a freshman in 2017 and earned All-State honorable mention in 2018 even after being sidelined for 11 games with an injury. Olson helped her team to a district title in 2019 as well as the state semifinals. She has not yet decided what she wants to study.
