UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior forward Brooke Madsen scored on the power play and Chantal Burke made 24 saves as the Penn State women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie in a College Hockey America (CHA) matchup with Syracuse Saturday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena.

Both goals were scored in the opening period, with Syracuse (2-11-1, 1-1-1 CHA) getting on the board just under five minutes in and Penn State (3-6-4, 0-2-1) responding with Madsen's power-play marker a little over ten minutes later.

Rene Gangarosa and Izzy Heminger tacked on assists for the Nittany Lions while Burke made ten saves in both the first and third periods for Penn State.

Syracuse's Allison Small made 26 saves in goal while teammate Victoria Klimek netted her third goal of the season with assists from Shelby Calof and Savannah Rennie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse pounced out to an early lead thanks to a breakaway goal from Victoria Klimek. She received a long, two-line pass from Shelby Calof and poked the puck in to give Syracuse the game's first goal 4:56 into the first period.

The period continued with a nice pace and good back-and-forth action with good scoring chances for both teams, but the next best chance to score came when Penn State went to the power play at 15:22 in the period and they ended up cashing in.

Madsen redirected Rene Gangarosa's shot from the point for her team-leading fifth of the season to knot the game 1-1 with 4:09 left to play in the first period.

Penn State outshot Syracuse 10-2 in the second but couldn't find the go-ahead goal to show for their efforts. The Nittany Lions' best chance came with just over 6 minutes left in the period when Abby Welch, Amy Dobson, and Julie Gough each had a try on goal from between the circles, but Syracuse goalie Allison Small made all three saves.

The third period swung back in Syracuse's favor in terms of shots on goal as the Orange led the category 10-5, but Chantal Burke made all ten stops. Her last three saves were especially impressive, with a nice kick save followed by two nice stops on a late Syracuse power play.

In the overtime period, Penn State went to the power play just 47 seconds in, but they weren't able to record a shot on goal before a tripping penalty on Rene Gangarosa ended the PSU advantage abruptly. The Nittany Lions completed the game 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, including the Orange's chance on the advantage in the extra period.

HEAR IT FROM THE NITTANY LIONS
Head Coach Jeff Kampersal

  • "We played solid towards the end. We didn't come out as hungry as we probably should have in the beginning, but we picked it up a little in the second. We outshot them. We had a good powerplay goal, which we worked on, penalty killing was better, special teams [was better]."
  •  "I think sometimes we're looking for perfect plays, but we just need to funnel the puck to the goal and the end wall and outwork them It's not necessarily being more physical or having more brawn, but puck protecting, getting the puck to the net and knowing that you're going to get hit and giving a little resistance back. That's what we need to do, there were plenty of rebounds, we just have to get to those areas and out them away."

 Senior forward Brooke Madsen

  • On her re-direct goals this season: "This year I've been focusing on getting to the net and trying to take away the goalie's eyes and showing my defense that this is my stick so they can hit it. They've been doing a great job at it, getting pucks through, it's helping a lot."
