NAPLES, Fla. – Senior Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) and freshman Mathilde Delavallade (Royan, France) each won both their matches this weekend to lead Penn State to a 6-5 victory over the University of Minnesota.
The Nittany Lions went down 4-2 following Saturday's matches at Quail Run Golf Club, but following some post-match adjustments to the matchups, Penn State went 4-1 on Sunday at Bay Colony Golf Club to secure the weekend victory.
"We changed up a few of the matches prior to Sunday and everyone just settled in and had much better touch around the greens," commented head coach Denise St. Pierre.
Herr and Delavallade secured the two points on Saturday winning their matches 3&2 and 2Up, respectively, but each match was close as freshman Isha Dhruva (Katy, Tx.) and sophomore Sarah Willis (Eaton, Ohio) each lost 1Down while junior Olivia Zambruno (Mt. Pleasant, Pa.) was defeated 2&1 and senior Megan McLean (Lebanon, N.J.) had to forfeit her match after nine holes due to an injury.
"I was hitting my irons really well this weekend and was able to give myself a lot of opportunities for birdie," commented Herr. "I also hit some great tee shots that helped set up my approach shots on some of the more demanding water holes."
On Sunday, Willis ran away with her match winning 5&4 while Herr won 2Up, Delavallade won 2&1 and Dhruva won 1Up. Zambruno had another tight match ultimately falling 1Down.
"My putting and chipping really helped me today as I was able to make some really great up and downs as well as birdies," mentioned Willis.
The Nittany Lions will return to action next week as they travel back to the Sunshine State for the UCF Challenge from Sunday-Tuesday.
