Women's Swimming & Diving Opens Big Tens with School Record

IOWA CITY, IOWA –  Women's swimming & diving achieved a school record and season-best to begin Big Ten Championship competition in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions swam their fastest 200 medley relay of all time at 1:37.09 and fastest 800 freestyle relay (7:12.38) of the season. They finished the day ranked eighth in the team standings with 84 points.

Penn State began the evening with a fifth-place swim in the 200 medley with a team of Marie Schobel, Carly Hart, Maddie Hart, and Maddie Cooke. In the 800 free relay, Abbie Amdor, Camryn Barry, Madison Murtagh, and Elizabeth Gaspari dropped nearly eight seconds from their previous season-best time.

"Every one of them swam well. I was pleased with the way they competed. It set the bar for us for the rest of the meet. They were two really solid relays and the ladies are excited for tomorrow," said head coach Tim Murphy.

The women will continue competition on Thursday with prelims beginning at 11a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET and finals starting at 6:30 CT/7:30 p.m. ET. All sessions will be streamed live via BTN Plus on BTN2Go. Complimentary access to BTN2Go is available to viewers connected to the internet network of a Big Ten university.
